Bird on a Wire

I didn't do much birding today which is a first! I am feeling kind of rundown and sick of the cold weather. I did see this red tailed hawk on a wire as I was driving around. I was able to get fairly close to it without spooking it.
I love the picture below and wish it came out better. The hawk stared at me for a few seconds before turning its head and looking forward again. What a rush! To make eye contact with a creature as magnificent as this!
Finally it flew off to join its mate. I watched the two of them flying around for a while in awe.

Have a great Saturday everyone. I am off to sleep for a while.

Great shots! I love the Red-tailed Hawks. They are fun to watch soar. We had one flying around the house and field the other day.

Hi Kallen, What great pictures. Can't believe you made eye contact with the hawk! I hope the rest makes you feel better and that you enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Get some rest this weekend, Kim.. Sounds like you need it!!!! Love the hawk. AND to get eye-to-eye contact---well, that's special. You've really had a great birding week!!!!

Great pics Kallen what a magnificent bird that is. The second pic down the way it is standing reminds of a Penguin! But that may just be me losing it, maybe I need some rest as well! Have a good sleep and a good weekend.

All good wishes from the UK.

You did a great job capturing this hawk. They are hard to get close to.

Red-tails are special! Seldom do I get to see one close up, you were fortunate!

The Red-tails I have been seeing lately have been paired up and are putting on some nice aerial soaring displays.

How awesome! This post reminds me a lot of the one I posted last summer: http://mynewenglandlife.blogspot.com/2008/08/red-tailed-hawk.html

Today my neighbor and I were walking our dogs through the neighborhood and I swear we saw the same hawk as last summer. He was just sitting there on the wire above the road watching us like it was no big deal. Wasn't afraid at all. We thought he might have been eyeing my Pug ; ) I didn't have my camera so I can't be sure if it IS the same bird, but we'll see if he keeps hanging around in the 'hood!

I also saw a Pileated Woodpecker right before that! Darned that camera sitting on the kitchen counter : /

Enjoy your birding tomorrow!

Very nice! I love the flight shot! I always get them sitting, but can't focus on them in the air before they are gone.

Wonderful! It is sooo darned hard to get a close up shot of a RTH, they spook very easily. You've done a great job.
