Downy Woodpecker in the Spot Light

I love to photograph the downy woodpecker who comes into my yard. Yesterday as I was filling up my thistle feeder, the downy flew right next to me and didn't notice my presence at first. I stood there still as a mouse and watched him. He finally saw me, gave out a chip in surprise and flew off.
Such a good looking birds who are perfect for photo taking because they are not as fast as some of the smaller songbirds. The vibrant red on its crown makes for some nice photos.
Love the photo where it is staring at me. I was hanging out of my bathroom window when I took this shot and he looked at me in surprise. This was the first time he has ever seen me like this and I am sure he was confused by what I was doing!

Our neighbors wonder about us too, but we keep doing the weird things we do to get photos.

Adorable! That's some view from your bathroom window. Our feeders are outside kitchen and diningroom windows but I have to shoot through windowscreen - one might have to go.....

"first time he has ever seen me like this" - ? I have this wonderful mental image of you hanging out the bathroom window, with some of that whie kabuki face mask on or something, scaring the bird!! :-0

Kallen - I laugh thinking of you hanging out your windows!! (Pssst - I do the same thing - my neighbors think I'm nuts!) Such cute photos of the Downy - and he definitely was looking at you - almost like he heard you talking about him!

LOL All! Yesterday was the first day I did it. You see, the bathroom window is the only window I can do it in, because I can't do it in the kitchen due to the fact that a cat may try and escape due to the fact that I can't shut them out of there. Again, due to the fact. ;o)

I did it for the first time w/ the hawk photo and then realized what fabulous photos I could take. I do have to contort myself in an odd position to get my camera to the feeders near the kitchen window but it is well worth it! HA!! Another new discovery for me! I think I will put some hummingbird feeders right near the bathroom window just for this during the summer as hummers are not that afraid of people. Plus it will be entertainment for the family while going about their business. ;o)

Hi Kallen,

What lovely Woodpecker photos, you are so lucky. We never see them in our garden. Just be careful you don't fall out of that window!!!

I like the downies, too. I could get much closer to them when I lived in a more populated area - I guess they got used to people.

Excuse me, I have to go find a bathroom window and hang out.

Great shots. I love to watch our local Downy hop from branch to branch on his way to the suet feeder. Hearing his "cheeep" call helps zoom in on him a little quicker.

Keep the great photos coming.
