The Song Sparrow is Singing the Winter Blues

When will winter be over with? We have so much ice here in Massachusetts that has yet to melt that is making going outside a game of Russian Roulette. When I go to fill up my stations each morning, I slip and slide and have to hold onto the house for dear life. It is funny how man can control many things in our life but not the weather. The ice has made me a hermit for it is much too dangerous right now to go searching for birds.

This was my first morning since last Sunday where I could hang around my house and watch the backyard birds. The song sparrow has discovered my Christmas tree that I put outside for him and has made it his own. He was chirping away this morning, grateful for the sun and getting prepared for an additional 10 inches of snow we are forecasted to get this evening.

The blue jay waited patiently for me to put out her peanuts this morning. I could see her watching me as I put them on her favorite tree stump. She finally got her breakfast and decided to eat it on a branch near the warm sunshine.

The song sparrows favorite feeder. He goes in search of the little white seeds that are in the blend which I think is millet.

The song sparrow again sitting by himself singing the winter time blues. I am singing them with him from my icy kitchen window.

All our snow is better than ice for walking. I found a few song sparrows by Lake Ontario yesterday. They are not usually around for our winter. I have never had one at a feeder.

Oh Kallen--Be careful when trying to walk in that ice. I'm sure your birdie friends appreciate you going out in that weather to give them food. It's no wonder the Song Sparrow is singing. He is singing a 'thank you' song to YOU.
Hugs,
Betsy

I love that little tray feeder you have - I can see why it's the sparrows favorite!

Oh the little sweeties!! Aren't those song sparrows cute - for a brown bird I think they are quite pretty. Oh, and the snow you're forecast we have been getting all day (heading due east) and it is the GRUNTS!!! Fill up your feeders before it starts, if you can!

We have had 2 1/2 feet the last two days in Juneau. I actually don't mind it. I live in Alaska, what can I expect.

The Eagles, Ravens and crows are hanging around the dump and mall parking lots, looking for scraps. They sit on top of the light polls and chatter. It is kind of like they are saying, "Hey buddy, got anything for a poor bird."

I saw 4 eagles flying from a mall parking lot to the dump yesterday. I never see the eagles on the ground though, they stay on the perch.

Song Sparrows will be OK. Just take care of yourself on that ice!

You can't be too careful. Go very slow. I found myself last winter laying on the ground with a bump on the back of my head on my way to fill the feeders. It happened so quick you can't believe it.

My goodness, Winter has barely begun! Seems it has a firm grip on us this year too.

What an adorable little Song Sparrow. I don't believe we have any right now but they are always a welcome sight. Seems we have plenty of woodpeckers though!

Glad your tree is a shelter for them.
I'm sure they appreciate its dense branches against the cold winter winds.
(Makes a nice photo, too!)

If you are going to be in your yard, you might looks for something to put on your boots like YakTrax which slip on your boot and help with the ice to keep you from slipping...
