Meet Stubby & His Spouse

Allow me the opportunity to introduce you to a friend of mine. He is a Carolina Wren who goes by the name of Stubby.

Stubby got his name from my friends and neighbors. You see, he and his spouse live in my neighbors yard in a hanging pot that is sheltered with a porch awning. He and the misses have called this dwelling their home now since early November. My friends would always tell me about the wren they had in their yard named Stubby who was named that due to the fact that he had no tail, in fact, all that appears on this little guys hind quarters is a little stub. At first they were concerned, but then realized that Stubby really didn't need one to go about his business.

Stubby normally spends most of his time over their house but has decided to come to mine more often due to the fact that he prefers my suet more to their store bought brand. We realized this when I gave them a couple of blocks of my home made suet. The two wrens would gobble that down, and leave the alternative to the starlings and woodpeckers. Now they are out of my suet so the happy couple have ventured over to my house for the good stuff. My neighbors now have the recipe, so they are hoping to get their live ins back some time soon.

Here is Stubby watching the traffic on the street.

And here is the Misses who has recently discovered my heated bird bath. The two of them spent most of their day drinking from it.

And lastly, the picture below is the two of them in my brush pile reflecting on the day and happy for their mini vacation. Last I heard my neighbor made the suet and it is hung it out for these two for tomorrow morning. I will be sad to see them go, and hope they decide to visit me a little more often. They certainly made this cold, dreary day a little more tolerable.

oh he is a handsome little guy, tail or no tail. I'm glad they kept you company during the storm. I expect your feeders will be busy today.

How sweet of the missus to accept Stubby without a wonderful tail. He must have a good personality, perhaps makes his own clothes.

I can't stop giggling at that name, Stubby. Perfect for all Carolina Wrens, even ones with tail feathers :o)

Loved this story - and your new heated birdbath...they probably think they've checked into some cushy spa!

Don't you just love him Shelley! He is so cute I have to laugh every time I see him!

Rich, thanks for the compliments. I am loving my new camea and pictures!

Betsy, I have about 200 picutres taken over the past couple of days. I really need to delete some of the ones I am not going to use from my hard drive because they are so large. I can't stop taking photos though! HA

Beth, I wish I could be at home today but alas I am office bound. When I left to go to work Squiggy was eating most of the food out of the coconuts. Poor little guy was starving and seems to have an eye infection of some sort. (Squiggy=Squirrel, not finch)

LOL NC!!! I bet he's a jack of many trades and the Misses finds that very appearing!

Mary, I too giggle whenever I say his name. All Carolina Wrens do indeed look like tiny little stubs now that I think of it!

Thanks Matt! I worked on this all last night and am happy with how less cluttered it is.

HA Deb! Your are probably right. I actually had a starling taking a bath in it yesterday. I think they all think my yard is a spa of some sort.

I enjoyed reading this entertaining "tail" about good old Stubby. Carolina Wrens are certainly fun birds to have around your yard.

Oh my! Someone's been REALLY playing with the Picasa!!! LOVE the new look and especially the collage on the header Kallen! Stubby is adorable too, but not as adorable as you! :c)

...first time to your blog! I do a lot of kitchen window bird watching too. I love Stubby and your little coconut feeder. It reminds me of the feeder in "A Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady" by Edith Holden.

I have never had a Carolina Wren come to my feeders... I hope and hope but thus far.. nothing. I noticed your comment about the Starlings too, I usually only see them on snowy days as well.

Owlman, I would love to see a winter wren but have not thus far. Maybe Stubby will fool a couple of them in coming to my yard. ;o).

Dawn, that is what is so puzzling about Stubby. We have no idea what could have caused this. I am not sure if its a birth defect of some sort of if he suffered some kind of trauma to the tail. I didn't even think birds could survive without tail feathers so this was a learning experience for me.

Larry, when I love these wrens. They have such cute personalities that it's a pure joy to have them in my yard.

Thanks Jayne! Picassa is totally addicting. I was at work today imagining what I could do with it if I were at home. HA!! For those of you looking for photo editing software you HAVE to check this out. I wouldn't have even discovered if it were not for you Jayne. You always find the best sites!

Kelly, I was so happy to discover your blog today. I was going through all of the blogs from the Nature Blog Network and found yours and really enjoy it. I am going to have to check out that book for sure because I love the coconut feeder and so do all of the birds.

Chad, I found your blog too through NBN and was happy to discover it. I wish I only got starlings when it snows but I get them all the time. They are always rude but incredibly so when it snows for some reason. They act like those people you see at the grocery store who are buying loaves of bread and gallons of milk before a snow storm out of fear they will never have bread or milk ever again!! LOL

I think those Carolina Wrens are so cute. Of course Stubby is an outstanding one. All your bird pictures are beautiful. We have one of those hawks that visits our yard getting the song birds and doves. Helen
