I love this little guy. I like to watch him climb down a tree like a little wind up toy. When he eats seed he makes a complete mess because it's hard for him to get the seed with his ultra narrow beak. His call is very recognizable to me so I always know when he's around. I have yet to see a red breasted nuthatch. My neighbor who has been watching birds for years has only seen one in her yard so I am not putting my hopes up. Now that it's winter, he hangs out with the chickadees, titmice, and his mate. I always look forward to seeing him every morning.
The photo is pretty good for me. The only bird I am having a hard time getting decent photos of is my favorite, the chickadee. He is rather hyper and small so getting him centered and clear has been a challenge for me.

I love the White-breasted nuthatches too Kallen. I've only had one or two Red-breasted varieties at my feeder, and have not seen them since. :c)

They are busy little guys. We are innundated with juncoes, a few chickades but no red breasted cousins yet.
Oh...cute little nutty and you're right..during the winter they chickadees, nuthatches, downy woodpeckers and probably a brown creeper travel as a group...

I have 2 resident Red-breasted Nuthatches in the yard. I rarely have a White-breasted at my feeder although I see them commonly along trails. Their call is distinctive for sure. I'm curious about the popularity of the pomegranate too with the birds. (I like them!)
You gotta love nuthatches. Can't believe your chickadee is so skittish. They are usually the first birds around to warm up to folks.

Deb, that's my favorite feeder of all of the ones I own. It cost me $10 at Walmart and the birds like it so much I am thinking of getting another. Not one bird touched the pomegranat which bummed me out some because I love them and I thought the birds would have too.
Trout, I have juncoes as well. The weird thing about them is they don't spend much time eating my bird food. They are too busy eating the weed seeds from behind my garage that I allowed to go wild so the birds would have winter food.
Rambling, I have yet to see a brown creeper. I am going to have to look at them in my guide so I can be prepared if I get a suprise visit! :o)
Ruth, Pomegranates rule!! I love them in my salad with blue cheese and sunflower seeds. The birds don't agree with me though.
NC, the chickadee isn't as much skittish as he is fast. He grabs his seed and scoots off to a branch to eat it. By the time I get my carmera ready, he is gone. The chickadee will actually start grabbing seed as soon as I put it out and I stand really still and he is so close to me I could touch him. God I love that little bird!!

I have been blessed with one red-breasted nuthatch in the last few weeks. He feeds at the fly through feeder, the tube feeder and the suet feeder. He is not bashful and I have taken lots of photos. I also have been able to get great shots of chestnut-backed chickadees, but the black-capped won't sit still long enough for me.
Aren't they the handsomest!? I have had red-breasteds in the summer and they look "unkempt" compared to the WBNH, but cute nonetheless:) Next year my goal is a brown-headed nuthatch. I've only seen pics and they are beauties.
A pomegranate seems pretty fancy for a nuthatch! ;)
